HPST 440 - Kanawai Hawaii/Nat Hawn Law - University of Hawaii West Oahu
Pre: HWST 107 or HPST 304. This course will examine the ways in which Native Hawaiians have engaged with, and been engaged by, this thing known as "kanawai" in Hawaiian and "law" in English. We will study traditional Hawaiian forms of law and also trace the evolution of law in Hawai`i following American and European contact. The course will include an examination of the ways that international law, as well as US federal and state legislation and judicial decisions have affected and continue to affect Native Hawaiian identity, rights, and entitlements in the modern era.
