Pre-Requisite: Credit for ART 108, ART 111, ART 123, ART 220, or consent of instructor. Recommended Preparation: ART 113 NOTE: This course encourages the artist to seek a deeper understanding and relationship with the Hawaiian landscape and environment through their art. Students will reconsider the landscape of Hawai'i through the lens of history and mo'olelo (stories), engage with contemporary environmental, social, and economic challenges we face, and explore some of the developing solutions and stewardship we see here in our 'paradise'. Artistic emphasis will be on issues of concept/narrative development, composition, and representation particular to the landscape tradition. This open-media painting course is a follow-on to all of our introductory painting courses, allowing artists to work in either oil, acrylic, or watercolor paints, or pastels (artists should have basic experience and know-how in their medium of choice). Field Trips and on-location activities will be required. This Studio Art course is hybrid and includes some online material, but will meet primarily in-person (face-to-face) on the scheduled day(s) and times. Students will be expected to follow all required safety protocols. |
