All registered students must attend the first class meeting. Failure to do so without prior consent of the instructor or department advisor may result in the assignment of your space to another student and require you to drop the class to avoid a grade of "F."
Students with prior experience in the language, with the exception of those who have fulfilled prerequisites at a UH system campus, are required to take a placement test (https://eall.manoa.hawaii.edu/placement-testing/). The 101 course is intended for students with no prior experience in the language. If your language proficiency is judged to be beyond the 101-level on the first day of class, you will be placed in a higher-level course. Students who are placed 102 or a higher level may complete the language requirement faster and also earn back-credits (up to 16 credits, which can be counted toward graduation. Restrictions apply: see the Manoa Back Credit Policy). Students starting from 101 will receive no back-credits. A A placement adjustment made in the first week of class does not guarantee a seat in the course appropriate for the student.
Taking the placement exam is optional for students who have already earned prerequisite college credits for Japanese language at one of the University of Hawai'i campuses, including community colleges, with a grade of C or better. However, the placement exam is strongly recommended if you are interested in taking advanced courses (300-400 level), if there has been a gap since your last language class, or if you would like a firmer sense of your proper placement.
Native speakers of Japanese are welcome to take JPN courses but are restricted to the following 12 NON-LANGUAGE SKILL courses: JPN350, JPN370, JPN424, JPN425, JPN451, JPN452, JPN453, JPN461, JPN466, JPN471, JPN472 and JPN475. For more information, contact the EALL Undergraduate Advisor (Moore 390; 808-956-2066; eallexam@hawaii.edu).
