Students with prior Samoan language study or heritage language ability are required to schedule an individual assessment interview. The 101 courses are intended for students with no prior experience in the language. Students placed in 102 or a higher level may complete the language requirement faster and earn up to 16 back-credits which can be counted toward graduation (Restrictions apply. See the Manoa Back Credit Policy). For language assessment interviews, please contact professors John Mayer (jmayer@hawaii.edu), Fata Simanu-Klutz (fata@hawaii.edu), or Faafetai Lesa (faafetai@hawaii.edu).
